Illume (SHAREit) Resume Services

BC ELN has been working closely with SFU IT to restore all Illume (SHAREit) services and mitigate the impact of the DDOS attacks against Simon Fraser University!

SFU IT implemented additional solutions last week that we've been testing, and so far it appears that connectivity to the SHAREit server has improved and there haven't been any further reports of extended outages from external traffic overloading their network.

  • Access: Illume libraries can cautiously resume normal access to your Illume (SHAREit) site now! Please let us know immediately via email if you encounter intermittent or extended outages this week -- and stop using Illume (SHAREit) if so.
     
  • Patron Requesting: Libraries with Patron-initiated requesting activated can re-activate immediately, though you may wish to resume Patron requesting in a few days instead after further load testing. Admins can check-off the "Guests" option again under their Staff Dashboard > ILL Admin > Participant Record > "Show Request This Button" to re-activate or contact us for assistance.
     
  • ISO Libraries: We have tested ISO communications with some ISO Relais libraries (thank you Capilano University & UVic for the assistance!) and ISO messages from Relais appear to be working at this time. But please let us know immediately if you notice any issues such as lost status updates, and pause further ISO messages until further notice if so.
     
  • Illume Support: SFU IT has restored access to email services including the Illume Support <support@illumebc.ca> inbox! If you recently sent us a message that you were expecting a response to, please send us a reminder this week as your message may have been lost in transit.

Updates will continue to be posted to the News & Updates pages of the IllumeBC website as they become available. Thank you to everyone for your patience as we worked with SFU IT on solutions to improve network traffic connectivity to the Illume (SHAREit) servers. Our host site Simon Fraser University has been experiencing intermittent network outages the past couple weeks due to Denial of Service attacks. The periodic wide-spread DDOS attacks have resulted in network slowness and interruptions for all SFU servers and services including Illume (SHAREit)ArcaBCSFU.ca and our SFU/BC ELN email

SFU IT is working on mitigating the issues and restoring services as soon as possible. When outages occur we recommend taking a short break from trying to access Illume and instead try again in 5-10 minutes in order to reduce the immediate load on SFU servers. Usually the outages are minor, lasting less than 5 minutes, and are often in late afternoon or early evening.

If the outage lasts longer than 15-30 minutes, please feel free to call the emergency mobile (1-236-880-1287) to leave a message reporting the issue especially if the Illume Support centre is closed.

We apologize for the inconvenience and will provide further information when it becomes available. And SFU IT exploring all options to restore network stability soon!
