Illume (SHAREit) Intermittent Network-wide Outages

Some libraries are experiencing earlier or longer extended outages than the rest of the province. When an extended outage occurs at your library, please complete an internet traffic Traceroute [Guide herefor your site and email the information to Illume Support <support@illumebc.ca>.

This information will hopefully help SFU IT investigate why some libraries in BC are experiencing more down-time than others during the Denial of Service attacks.

March 10th, 2026: Many libraries are reporting repeated slowdowns or complete Illume outages as they are unable to connect to the SFU SHAREit servers. Please try again later as the SHAREit servers are up and working but interimittently inaccessible due to the SFU network outages.

All BC ELN staff are experiencing a delay in sending and receiving emails today due to the SFU network outages from increased Denial of Service attacks that have ramped up on servers at SFU (BC ELN's home site). Please feel free to report your outage dates/times including a Traceroute directly to Illume Support <support@illumebc.ca> if possible.

Our host site Simon Fraser University has been experiencing intermittent network outages the past couple weeks due to Denial of Service attacks. The periodic wide-spread DDOS attacks have resulted in network slowness and interruptions for all SFU servers and services including Illume (SHAREit)ArcaBCSFU.ca and our SFU/BC ELN email

SFU IT is working on mitigating the issues and restoring services as soon as possible. When outages occur we recommend taking a short break from trying to access Illume and instead try again in 5-10 minutes in order to reduce the immediate load on SFU servers. Usually the outages are minor, lasting less than 5 minutes, and are often in late afternoon or early evening.

If the outage lasts longer than 15-30 minutes, please feel free to call the emergency mobile (1-236-880-1287) to report the issues especially if the Illume Support centre is closed.
